Welcome to the first instalment of our "Meet..." series, where we introduce you to some of our fabulous members and their Guiding stories. Let's meet Maya...
Tell us a little about yourself...
Hi, I’m Maya, I’m currently a young leader and Ranger in Carmarthenshire. In fact, my mum is my Ranger leader. I have also been a part of Dyfodol y Ddraig since 2023.
What’s your funny Guiding story?
One of the Rangers in my unit has given herself a mission of coming up with a nickname for everyone, for me she has come up with Buggy, Otter, Rat, Hamster and Mousy (mouse being my young leader name). Buggy was actually because I gave her a Christmas card with a bug on it, and also am quite into bugs of late - not because she is saying I look like a bug. What she came up with for the other girls, I seem to remember was either Wotsist or Satsuma as she was wearing an orange coat. For herself she is currently quite partial to the idea of Raccoon or a ‘Trash Panda’.
We hear that you’ve taken on a big challenge, care to share?
I am currently working on starting my Silver Duke of Edinburgh with Guiding. This is something that has taken rather a lot of coordination and caused confusion, and there are many confusing things still to come. Despite this, I am still very glad as up till this September when I started college, I wouldn't have got the opportunity to as I was home educated which makes things like D of E unnecessarily complicated, but guiding made it possible. Not just for me but another member of my Ranger unit who is home educated and very keen to do hers too.
Any final thoughts on why Girlguiding is so important to you?
Without Guiding I would have lost out on many opportunities and wouldn't have met the girls in my unit and formed friendships, and I would be missing out on the perhaps unique experience of being called Buggy in a complementary manner.
